Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers, how they work:
The most common fire extinguisher is the stored pressure portable.
The extinguisher is filled about 3/4's of the way with the chemical and
then pressurized with nitrogen. The nitrogen is lighter then than the
chemical and forces the chemical down to the pickup tube through the
valve and out the nozzle to apply to the fire.
Classes of Fires
A - Paper, wood and the combustibles
B - Fuel and flammables
C - Electrical
D - Metal
K - Deep fat fryers
Why you need portable fire extinguishers:
Fires usually start small and slow. An extinguisher will put out a small fire before it gets out of control.
Why maintenance is important:
These extinguishers can hang on a wall for years and things happen: Corrosion, accidental discharge, leaks, spiders, fork lifts and a host of other events can make the extinguisher inoperable. By law, any extinguisher used in a commercial environment is to be serviced annually.
Placement should be convenient. In an office setting, you need to have an extinguisher within 75 feet of any place a person can be. If there are stairs, you need one on each level.
Warehouse in a light hazard is 75'
Warehouse in a heavy hazard is every 50'
If the building is equipped with over head fire sprinklers, it does not change the requirements for portable fire extinguishers.
